Soot marks on bricks

Use the nozzle of a vacuum - cleaner to suck up light marks,
and scrub ingrained dirt with clean water and a stiff brush.

Treat persistent stains with a weak solution of hydrochloric acid in water, but take care as it is highly poisonous and corrosive.
