A minor water leak can be repaired, but if it happens on the second floor, it's almost sure to leave a water stain on the main-floor ceiling.
If your ceiling is white, you don't have to repaint, however. Instead, put equal parts of water and chlorine bleach in a spray bottle, and spray the stain. If the stain fades, but doesn't go away completely, repeat the process.
