We all fear smoke, but something else we should be wary of is carbon monoxide. This gas results from combustion of fuels in furnaces and boilers, as well as in fireplaces. If these are vented properly, the carbon monoxide exits your home harmlessly. If there's a flaw in the ventilation, however, your home can fill up with these deadly and odorless fumes. An important safety device to protect against this is a carbon monoxide sensor. This is very sensitve and makes a loud chriping and buzzing sound when it goes off. If you hear this, open a few windows and leave the house.
