Sphagnum moss
This is the traditional liner for baskets but its
collection can pose an ecological threat bogs. Moss
collected from the lawn is a good subsitute.
Conifer clippings
Clippings from conifers such as Leyland cypress are alternatives to moss as they remain green until the basket becomes covered with plants. For best results, line the inside of the clippings with polythene to reduce water loss.
Recycled wool and cotton
These preformed liners are generally dyed green to look like moss. It is easy to cut planting slits in them and some come with precut slits. Some have a polythene inner lining to aid moisture retention.
Cocount fibre
These are similar to wool liner but made of a much coarser material through which water will run freely.
Foam liners
These fit in the baskets easily but making planting slits is more diffcult than with the recycled wool and cotton liners. They tend to look unsightly until the plants cover them.
Polythene:
Black or green polythene makes a cheap and effective liner though it looks slightly unsightly until the plants start to hide it.
Preformed wood fibre
These rigid liners sit inside the basket and are generally dark brown in colour. However, it is difficult to cut holes for planting up the sides, though they are useful where you want ot have a succession of plantings as they can be lifted out and replaced with another preplanted liner.
