Plants in container need regular watering throughout the summer. The following tips should help prevent your from plants drying out and reduce the need for watering.
1. Use a good-quality, moisture-retentive compost.
2. Consider mixing a water-absorbing gel with the compost before potting up plants. This will certainly improve the performance of poorer compost.
3. Grow plants in the largest container practicable.
4. Line porous containers, such as terracotta pots and wire hanging baskets, with polythene to reduce water loss.
5. Group containers together so the plants create a moist microclimate around their leaves and shade the compost.
6. Water containers in early morning and evening rather than in the heat of the day.
7. Water the compost, not the foliage.
